Does Dental Insurance Cover Veneers?

Veneers are a popular, long-lasting option to restore to correct discoloration in the teeth, close gaps, or fix chips with a durable and aesthetically pleasing solution.

According to a study in the National Library of Medicine, the majority of patients who get veneers (porcelain) has them last for 10 years without re-intervention – proving it to be one of the most durable solutions for damaged teeth.

At The Dental House, veneers are one of our specialties – and we have many years of experience implementing them. One of the most common questions we get is, “Does dental insurance cover veneers?”

Unfortunately, the answer isn’t always straightforward, and it often depends on your specific insurance plan and the reason you’re getting dental veneers. In this blog, we’ll explore what veneers are, how they can benefit you, and whether or not your dental insurance is likely to cover the cost.

What Are Veneers?

Veneers are thin, custom-made shells – usually created from porcelain or composite resin – designed to cover the front surface of your teeth. They are bonded directly to your natural teeth to improve their appearance. Veneers can be used to address a variety of dental issues, including:

Tooth Discoloration

Veneers offer a long-lasting solution for deep or stubborn stains that do not respond to traditional teeth whitening methods. They can give your teeth a brighter, more uniform color, which helps to enhance your overall appearance.

Chipped or Worn Teeth

Teeth that are chipped, cracked, or worn down over time can benefit from dental veneers. Veneers help to restore the natural shape of the damaged teeth, providing both aesthetic and functional benefits. As the veneer is bonded to the compromised tooth, it protects it from further wear and can help maintain the structural integrity of your mouth.

Gaps Between Teeth

Dental veneers can close small gaps between teeth – without the need for braces. This makes them a quick and non-invasive option for improving alignment within your mouth. Veneers can also be customized to make sure gaps are closed to look natural and complement your dental structure.

Misalignment

While veneers can help with alignment issues – but they are not a solution for severe misalignment. They can correct minor crookedness and improve the appearance of your teeth, but that’s about it.

Dental veneers are ideal for situations where braces might be too invasive or unnecessary for small adjustments. They create the illusion of perfectly aligned teeth, without the need for extensive orthodontic treatment.

Irregular Shape

Veneers can be used to reshape uneven or irregularly shaped teeth. This procedure works to smooth out uneven edges, elongate shorter teeth, or create a more uniform appearance. This can help to improve the symmetry and balance of your teeth.

Veneers are a durable, non-invasive option that can lead to a dramatic improvement to the mouth. However, the catch is they are generally considered a cosmetic procedure, which means they may not be covered by insurance.

How Much Do Veneers Cost?

The cost of dental veneers can vary based on several factors – primarily the material used and the number of veneers needed.

On average, porcelain veneers cost between $800 and $2,500 per tooth.

Porcelain veneers are usually more expensive but offer better durability, lasting 10-15 years or more with proper care. They also provide a more natural look, closely mimicking the translucency of the natural tooth enamel.

On the other hand, composite resin veneers are a more affordable option, typically ranging from $250 to $1,500 per tooth. While they are less expensive, they generally have a shorter lifespan of about 5-7 years and are more prone to staining and chipping.

Note: These costs are national averages. When you come to The Dental House for veneers, we will evaluate all factors related to your dental situation and insurance to provide an exact cost.

Does Dental Insurance Cover Veneers?

Unfortunately, most dental insurance plans do not cover veneers – as they are considered a cosmetic procedure.

Insurance is generally intended to cover procedures that are deemed medically necessary. This is why insurance usually helps cover the cost of dental fillings, dental implants, crowns, and root canals – as well as preventive care like cleanings and exams. Dental veneers do not normally fall under the category or “necessary” treatment.

However, there are some exceptions and scenarios where insurance may provide partial coverage for veneers. These include:

1. Damaged Teeth

If a tooth is significantly damaged or weakened, a dental veneer may be required to restore its structure and function. If you can make a strong case for this (with your dentist’s recommendation) your insurance may cover part of the cost.

Note: Your dentist will need to provide documentation to your insurance company explaining why the procedure is necessary for your dental health.

2. Alternative to Other Procedures

Sometimes, veneers might be covered by insurance if they are being used as an alternative to a more traditional dental procedure that is covered by insurance. For instance, if a veneer is being used instead of a dental crown to repair a damaged tooth, there might be some degree of coverage.

Note: Check with your insurance provider to see if they consider veneers an acceptable alternative to a traditional procedure under your plan.

3. Insurance with Cosmetic Dentistry Coverage

Some high-end PPO dental insurance plans – or supplemental cosmetic insurance policies – may offer coverage for cosmetic procedures, which includes veneers. If you have one of these plans, you might be able to get partial or even full coverage for the treatment.

Note: These plans are less common and typically come with higher premiums.

Payment Plans for Veneers

Some dental practices provide options for payment plans that allow you to spread the cost of veneers over several months.

The Dental House is one of those practices. We understand that unexpected dental costs are tough to budget for, and we believe no one should have to sacrifice their oral health due to financial stress. Talk us about your situation and we’ll find a solution that works for everyone.

Appearance

Braces are highly visible with metal brackets and wires. Invisalign is clear do not stick out. Both have their pros and cons depending on personal preference and lifestyle needs.

  • Visibility: Braces are highly noticeable, whereas Invisalign aligners are almost invisible.
  • Aesthetic Concerns: Many people prefer Invisalign for its discreet look, especially adults.
  • Customization: Invisalign aligners are custom-made for your teeth to get a highly precise fit.

Maximizing Your Insurance Benefits

Although insurance may not cover the full cost of dental veneers, there are some ways to maximize your benefits and reduce your out-of-pocket expenses.

1. Pre-Authorization

Before getting veneers, ask us to submit a pre-authorization to your insurance company. This will provide you with an estimate of what your insurance will cover and what you’ll be responsible for paying. It’s a very important step to avoid any surprises when the bill arrives.

2. Bundling Procedures

If you need other dental work done, grouping in veneers can potentially save you money. For example, if you need a crown or filling, doing these procedures at the same time might help you take advantage of insurance coverage for treatments deemed medically necessary.

3. Annual Maximums

Most dental insurance plans have an annual maximum, which is the most they will pay in a single year. If you plan to get veneers and other dental work, you can schedule them in a way that makes the most of your insurance benefits over several years. Talk to your dentist and insurance provider to learn about your options.
